Kailiev Syrym(4, male), a boy from Chilek, Kazakhstan, was selected as a recipient of the Global Medical Sharing Project 2017, managed jointly by Gyeonggi Province and Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, Bucheon, to invite foreign patients in need of help. He lost his father and was raised by his grandmother until he was two years old. He was sent to an orphanage when his grandmother suffered from economic difficulties. He was born with cleft palate, a split or opening in the roof of the mouth. Also, it was difficult for him to eat property and talk to his peers.
Kailiev Syrym came to South Korea on October 16, 2017, and received cleft palate surgery on October 18. Professor Kim Yong-bae of plastic surgery performed the surgery. After the surgery was held successfully, Syrym left Korea and returned home on October 27.
“The surgery was successful, and I hope he will grow up bright and healthy, getting along with his friends,” said Kim Hyeong-cheol, head of the international medical cooperation team at Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital, Bucheon.
